Everyone Needs a Mentor. The Golden Bears Hockey Alumni Mentorship Program connects alumni with current players to support career development, personal growth, and life beyond hockey, fostering lifelong ties to the GBH community.

Mentees
Mentees are responsible for driving the relationship and are expected to:

Initiate and schedule meetings

Prepare questions or discussion topics

Mentors
Mentors serve as trusted guides who:

Share career experience, life lessons, and perspective

Program Structure
Model: One‑to‑one mentorship

Duration: One academic/hockey season

Meeting Frequency: Minimum of one meeting every two months (45–60 minutes)

Format: Virtual, in‑person, or phone (consistency matters more than format)

Program Cycle: Annual cohort

Accessibility: Mentors are reasonably accessible between meetings when appropriate

Expertise: No special expertise required — only willingness to help

Any Golden Bears hockey alumnus may serve as a mentor if they:

Mentor‑mentee pairings are coordinated by program connectors based on:

Blake Gustafson
Our second annual GBH Teddy Bear Toss would not have been possible at its current scale without the support of our alumni group. Their financial contribution directly supported the purchase and sale of teddy bears and they helped mediate key planning decisions. With their guidance and involvement, this year’s Teddy Bear Toss was more than twice as successful as last years inaugural event! Alumni support also helped make possible the first-ever Pandas Teddy Bear Toss, which - from my knowledge - was the first women’s teddy bear toss in Usports history. For our Pandas athletes, it was their first opportunity to take part in a teddy bear toss game, marking an important step forward for inclusion and the continued advancement of women in sport. Beyond funding, alumni provided valuable mentorship throughout the process. Rick consistently challenged us to think through real-world scenarios related to business, sponsorship, and event planning. These lessons strengthened the way we approached the event and provided skills and perspective that we will carry beyond this role. The willingness of alumni to teach, guide, and invest time alongside financial support made a substantial difference in the planning and success of these events. These initiatives were led by the University Athletics Board and reflect what student leadership can accomplish when backed by experienced alumni. That same support continues as we head into the Legacy Fund Plebiscite on March 4th and 5th, where we are campaigning to retain the $5.11 student fee that directly supports athletics. This fee provides just under $2 million over each five-year renewal period. It has been encouraging to have alumni fully behind this effort as we work toward a successful outcome.

Jakob Herauf
Being part of the Golden Bears Hockey Alumni community has been a huge support throughout this process. The strength of the alumni network and the willingness to support one another has made a huge difference as I adjust to life after being a student-athlete. The alumni network has opened doors and provided guidance that not many students have access to. I’m grateful to be part of the GBH alumni and hope to pass on the same support and guidance to other student-athletes in the near future. Thank you again for your time, support, and advocacy. It means a lot.

Noah Boyko
Last summer, I had the opportunity to work with Peterson Capital, where I gained hands-on exposure to institutional investing through bottom-up company screening, participation in live investor and management calls, and ongoing investment research. I also attended an investor conference in Montreal, engaging directly with management teams, analysts, and other market participants, which provided valuable perspective on how investment ideas are sourced, evaluated, and debated in real time. I’m especially grateful to Rick Peterson for taking me on and for his leadership throughout the summer , his guidance was instrumental in accelerating my understanding of the investment industry and how thoughtful, disciplined decision-making translates into long-term results.
